Bessie Alva Griffiths Papers 1888-1940

Houston pianist Bessie Alva Griffiths studied piano with local philanthropist Ima Hogg before going on to give recitals and to teach piano in her home. Griffith's papers include personal photographs, some programs and other materials related to her career, and a small amount of memorabilia.

Native Houstonian Bessie Griffiths was born in 1896. She studied piano with Ima Hogg, the daughter of former governer James Hogg, who gave music lessons to a select group of students before going on to become a leading local art patron. Between 1912 and 1916 Griffiths studied with various teachers in Europe.
